Crypto Wallet Security: How to Protect Your Assets Before and After a Swap

Essential security practices for crypto wallets. How to verify addresses, avoid phishing, and safely receive swapped funds.

The most common cause of lost crypto is not exchange hacks — it’s user error. A wrong wallet address, a phishing link, or a compromised seed phrase can wipe out holdings instantly.

Before your next swap, review these fundamentals.

1. Always Verify the Receiving Address

Before pasting your wallet address into any swap widget:

  • Copy it fresh from your wallet app (don’t retype it)
  • Check the first 4 and last 4 characters after pasting
  • Never use an address from a chat, email, or search engine result

Clipboard malware exists — it replaces your copied address with an attacker’s. Always verify.

2. Start With a Test Transaction

For large amounts, send a small test swap first. Confirm it arrives before sending the full amount.

3. Use a Non-Custodial Wallet

When using instant swap exchanges (ChangeNOW, StealthEX, etc.), the swap sends funds directly to your wallet — the exchange never holds them.

Popular non-custodial wallets:

  • MetaMask — EVM chains (ETH, BNB, MATIC, AVAX)
  • Phantom — Solana ecosystem
  • Trust Wallet — multi-chain mobile wallet
  • Ledger / Trezor — hardware wallets for maximum security

4. Hardware Wallets for Large Holdings

If you hold more than $1,000 in crypto, a hardware wallet (Ledger Nano X, Trezor Model T) is worth it. Your private key never touches an internet-connected device.

You can still use swap widgets with a hardware wallet by:

  1. Connecting Ledger/Trezor to MetaMask
  2. Copying your receiving address from MetaMask
  3. Pasting it into the swap widget as normal

5. Protect Your Seed Phrase

Your seed phrase (12 or 24 words) is the master key to your wallet. Anyone with it can take everything.

  • Write it on paper and store in two physical locations
  • Never photograph it, type it into a computer, or store it in cloud
  • Never share it with anyone — no legitimate support will ask for it

6. Bookmark the Exchange Widgets

Phishing sites mimic ChangeNOW, StealthEX, and other exchanges. Always access swap widgets through bookmarked URLs or our trusted guides.
